Dr. Sutter performs periodontal (gum) surgery on patients who have advanced cases of gum disease. The surgery is designed to remove infection at the root level and reshape supporting bone beneath a patient's teeth.
What to expect
If Dr. Sutter decides perio osseous surgery is appropriate for your situation, he'll want to schedule you for a scaling and root planning procedure first. This basic periodontal treatment will remove hardened plaque below the gum line and smooth rough areas on your tooth roots.
Once you're ready for the surgery, Dr. Sutter will thoroughly numb the treatment area with a local anesthetic. When he's sure you're fully anesthetized, he'll surgically uncover your tooth roots and clean the area, removing any infection. Because advanced periodontal disease most often causes jaw bone degeneration, Dr. Sutter will recontour damaged and pitted bone structure as well. This approach is generally effective in eliminating the moderate periodontal pockets that harbor infection. After the infection has been eradicated and the bone reshaped, Dr. Sutter will close the treatment site with a few stitches.
