Gum Disease Therapy

Gum disease is the most common disease in the United States. It affects nearly 80 percent of the population and increases the risk for stroke, heart disease, osteoporosis, and diabetes. Fortunately, early detection can prevent the bacteria from spreading, allowing you to maintain good oral health and to promote good overall health.

Dr. Sutter will look for signs of gum disease as part of your regular checkup. If caught early enough, prevention may be as simple as learning new brushing techniques, changing oral healthcare products, or improving your flossing routine.

We can often treat gum disease with non-surgical therapies that include:

  • Scaling—the removal of hardened plaque below the gum line
  • Root Planing—reducing rough areas on teeth roots
  • Local Antibiotic Therapy—in conjunction with scaling and root planing to kill bacteria
  • Laser Treatment—to reduce gum infection

Dr. Sutter uses Arestin, an antibiotic treatment in powder form. After performing scaling and root planing, we will place the antibiotic powder into the infected areas of the gums. The slow-release medicine fights disease-causing bacteria for up to 21 days. Studies show that the combination of therapies is more effective at reducing infection than scaling and root planing alone.

An advanced case of gum disease may require surgery. If required, Dr. Sutter can refer you to a trusted periodontal specialist.
